As a young girl in middle school I would take the bus or train to New York City from South Jersey almost every other weekend. My best friend, Amanda, would have auditions and I would LOVE to tag along with her. Just her and I. 16 years old. I swear we thought we were professional photographers by how many pictures we would take of each other in the city. Since I am no longer in my teenage years, I now look at the city so different and I am able to appreciate different areas that I never knew about when I was younger.
New York City will always hold a special place in my heart because of my past memories. It’s the city I was absolutely in love with. It’s the city I was going to go to college in. It’s the city I was going to live in. It’s the city I was going to work in. It’s the city that gave me my freedom. It’s the city that taught me there is so much more to the world than my tiny hometown.
Just a couple of days ago, I flew into Jersey and took the train into NYC. Arrived in Penn Station, walked past The Fashion Institute of Technology (where I applied to back in 2014), and then found a fab little store called Buffalo Exchange. The store is a privately owned, family-operated fashion resale retailer that buys and resells used clothing. I stumbled upon a beautiful white lace Fashion Nova dress for $13! Lets just say this trip of mine was already magnificent.
Finally, making my way into Flatiron, I realized that it may be my favorite neighborhood. It is named after the iconic wedge-shaped Flatiron Building, this commercial neighborhood is also home to tall apartment buildings and office high-rises. Locals and tourists, frequent the hip bars, food trucks are all along Fifth Avenue. Flatiron is also home to Eataly, which is a vibrant Italian marketplace that features an array of cafes, counters, restaurants, and a cooking school. I have been looking to go to Eataly for the past year and it seemed that I could just never “find it”. I strolled up to Eataly unexpectedly and was super excited! I would highly recommend visiting when in the city.
Another amazing spot to eat in Flatiron is Pret a Manager, which offers organic coffee and natural food at a very reasonable price. Pret is based in the United Kingdom and creates handmade natural food avoiding all the obscure extras common to so much of the ‘prepared’ and ‘fast’ food on the market today.
Okay, so lunch is over and its time for the most important activity of the day! Pictures! Of course, we are all wearing Sand and Satin. Looking CHIC while traveling in a big big city!
